NATURE IS METAL
Carter Chappell and I took a little trip south to St. Francis National Forest on my birthday. The conditions were perfect for my Mosely CX bike but Carter suffered a bit on some 25’s. The fire roads were more like Play-Doh from the recent rains but there was a section where I tried to power through that was just ice cream.
We weren’t supposed to take that route, though. The high road splits and we ended up dipping out of the Forest and onto some delta farm roads; that’s where we found the sows and the ice cream road. Delta farmland roads are always picturesque; or maybe I’ve just been here long enough to appreciate them. Flat, expansive vistas probably don’t conjure wanderlust in many people.
There’s always a crossroads and there’s always a lone tree and they look all the same to anyone else, but there’s more history and more tragedy and more turmoil and more magic down here than most of the other places I’ve been.
Hell, I even picked this route for the little elevation it DID offer but looking back I don’t care. The temperature was perfect, the photo opportunities were too many and I can’t wait to go back. And maybe this time we’ll stay on the high road! Delve deeper into the ride on Strava.
